On this day in 2010, Machida and Shogun 2 took place at UFC 113 in Montreal.
The fight started with Machida checking Shogun’s kick, Shogun landed his next leg kick but was countered with
a left hand from Machida, another kick was landed and another one checked. Machida decided to take the
fight to the floor via a trip, but Shogun was back up in 20 seconds.
Shogun landed 3 knees to Machida’s left leg in the clinch, and when they separated,
Shogun rushed forward, he missed 6 punches but connected on the 7th one with a right hand.
And followed up with kick to the body, which led to Machida deciding to take the fight to the ground again, and
once again Shogun got up quickly, in just 31 seconds.
He was met with a knee to the body, and Machida would be successful again with that strike,
but Machida’s left hand was then countered over the top by Shogun’s right which dropped him.
Three more strikes on the ground and Machida was knocked out completely and Shogun became the UFC light heavyweight champion.
Also on the card, Josh Koscheck defeated Paul Daley by decision, but many people just remember the suckerpunch afterwards,
which led to Daley being kicked out of the UFC.
And also on the card Matt Mitrione defeated Kimbo Slice in the 2nd round via TKO.
That would end up being Kimbo’s last fight in the UFC, he would go onto pursue boxing,
but return to MMA 5 years later and take on Ken Shamrock and Dada 5000 in Bellator, before passing away in June of last year.
